It’s November 2024, and for the past few months, I’ve found myself lost in the depths of 3D printing communities, scrolling through endless posts of incredible creations and bizarre, humorous objects people have printed. From intricate models to quirky gadgets, the sheer variety and creativity have been absolutely great. I’ve been a spectator, amazed by the talent and the sheer fun people have with their 3D printers, all while reminding myself that I already have far too many hobbies as it is. I really didn’t need to start another one.

But of course, like many others before me, I couldn’t resist forever. When Bambulab had a sale on their 3D printers, I finally gave in. It was the perfect storm: an irresistible deal, the constant buzz of 3D printing possibilities, and my growing curiosity. So, I went ahead and ordered one. I might have said no a hundred times before, but this time, I hit the checkout button. Let’s see what kind of trouble I’ve just gotten myself into.

Downloading pre-made models from the internet can certainly be enjoyable, but the true magic lies in the process of creating something entirely from scratch. The journey of having an idea, designing it, sketching it out, and then bringing it to life through 3D printing is incredibly rewarding. Although I’m still on my way to fully understanding every aspect of the process, the experience has been real fun so far. This particular project is an LED light that I designed in FreeCAD and printed. More info here.
